The Ghost of George Armwood: A Lynching History in America’s Racial Landscape

The horrific lynching of George Armwood on October 18, 1933, by a white mob in Princess Anne, Maryland, is a chilling reminder of America’s dark history of racial violence. This brutal act, where Mr. Armwood was beaten, hanged, dragged, and burned, was not merely a singular act of hate but a reflection of the deep-seated racial prejudice and inequality that plagued the nation.

This heinous crime sparked national outrage and calls for justice, yet the subsequent investigations and trials were marred by obstruction, intimidation, and ultimately, impunity for the perpetrators. The failure to hold anyone accountable for Mr. Armwood’s murder underscored the systemic racism that permeated the legal system and society at large.

The Armwood lynching is a stark illustration of how racial terror was used to maintain white supremacy and control Black communities. It also highlights the complicity of the broader community, where thousands participated in or witnessed the lynching without intervention.

This event had a profound impact on American race relations, further deepening the divide between Black and white Americans. It fueled the Civil Rights Movement, as African Americans demanded an end to racial violence and equal protection under the law. The legacy of this lynching and countless others continues to shape discussions around race, justice, and equality in America today.

The George Armwood lynching serves as a somber reminder of the work that remains to be done to address the systemic racism that still plagues our nation. It is a call to remember the victims of racial violence and to strive for a more just and equitable society for all.

The failure of the justice system to punish the perpetrators of the George Armwood lynching added to the racial divide in America in several ways:

Reinforced white supremacy: It sent a clear message that Black lives were not valued equally and that white people could commit acts of violence against Black people with impunity. This reinforced the existing power structure and made Black people feel unsafe and vulnerable.

Eroded trust in the legal system: Black people saw that the justice system was not designed to protect them. This led to a deep distrust of the legal system and a sense that they could not expect fair treatment.

Fueled anger and resentment: The lack of justice for Mr. Armwood and countless other victims of racial violence fueled anger and resentment among Black communities. This anger and resentment contributed to the Civil Rights Movement and other forms of resistance against racial injustice.

Perpetuated racial stereotypes: The lynching reinforced the negative stereotype of Black men as criminals and rapists. This stereotype was used to justify further violence and discrimination against Black people.

Created a climate of fear: The lynching created a climate of fear and intimidation in Black communities. This fear made it difficult for Black people to speak out against racial injustice and to demand their rights.

The impact of the justice system’s failure to punish the perpetrators of the George Armwood lynching continues to be felt today. The racial divide in America is still very real, and the legacy of this and other lynchings continues to shape race relations and policy.

Here are some additional points to consider:

  • The lynching of George Armwood was not an isolated incident. It was part of a larger pattern of racial violence that plagued the United States throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
  • The failure to hold anyone accountable for Mr. Armwood’s murder was a reflection of the systemic racism that permeated the legal system and society at large.
  • The legacy of this lynching and countless others continues to shape discussions around race, justice, and equality in America today.

Hate Crimes Awareness Month: A Time for Reflection and Action

October is Hate Crimes Awareness Month, a time to reflect on the disturbing rise of hate-motivated violence in the United States and to recommit ourselves to combating it. Officials have reported a 60% increase in hate crimes over the last five years, with a record number of incidents targeting individuals based on race, religion, sexual orientation, and gender identity.

These statistics paint a grim picture of a society where hate and prejudice continue to fester. From the horrific mass shooting in Buffalo, New York, to the countless acts of violence and intimidation that go unreported, the impact of hate crimes is felt deeply by individuals and communities across the country.

The urgency of this issue was highlighted when it was revealed that more than 50% of hate crimes in 2023 were motivated by racial or ethnic hatred. Black people, Jewish people, and members of the LGBTQ+ community were among the most frequently targeted groups.

But it’s not just the numbers that are alarming; it’s the mainstreaming of hate speech and extremist ideologies that is fueling this surge in violence. The spread of conspiracy theories, the demonization of marginalized groups, and the normalization of bigotry in public discourse all contribute to a climate where hate can thrive.

As individuals, we have a responsibility to speak out against hate and to stand in solidarity with those who are targeted. We can support organizations like the SPLC that are working to combat hate and extremism, and we can advocate for policies that promote equality and justice.

This Hate Crimes Awareness Month, let’s commit to building a more inclusive and equitable society where everyone feels safe and respected, regardless of their race, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

Some specific examples of hate crimes that have occurred in the United States recently include the mass shooting in Buffalo, New York, where a white gunman killed 10 Black people at a grocery store; the shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, where 49 people were killed; and the murder of Ahmaud Arbery, a Black man who was chased down and killed by three white men while jogging.

Individuals can help combat hate crimes by:

  • Speaking out against hate: When you see or hear hateful language or actions, don’t stay silent. Speak up and let the person know that their behavior is not acceptable.
  • Standing in solidarity with targeted groups: Show your support for marginalized communities by attending rallies, donating to organizations that support them, and speaking out against discrimination.
  • Supporting organizations that combat hate and extremism: There are many organizations working to fight hate crimes and extremism. You can support their work by donating money, volunteering your time, or simply spreading awareness of their efforts.
  • Advocating for policies that promote equality and justice: Contact your elected officials and urge them to support policies that protect marginalized groups and combat hate crimes.
  • Educating yourself and others about hate crimes: The more you know about hate crimes, the better equipped you’ll be to fight them. Share information about hate crimes with your friends, family, and community.
  • Reporting hate crimes to the authorities: If you witness a hate crime, report it to the police immediately. You can also report hate crimes to organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Hate Crimes Awareness Month is significant because it:

  • Raises awareness of the disturbing rise of hate-motivated violence.
  • Encourages reflection on the impact of hate crimes on individuals and communities.
  • Promotes a recommitment to combating hate crimes and building a more inclusive society.

Policy recommendations to address hate crimes include:

  • Making hate crime reporting mandatory.
  • Funding prevention initiatives.
  • Increasing interagency coordination against hate.
  • Addressing white supremacy in federal law enforcement.
  • Promoting online safety and holding tech and social media companies accountable.

Former State Department Director Launches “A New Policy” to Restructure US Policy in Israel and Palestine

In a significant move, Josh Paul, a former Director at the U.S. Department of State and Senior Advisor at DAWN, has announced the launch of “A New Policy.” This non-profit organization, accompanied by a Political Action Committee (PAC), aims to reshape US policy towards Israel and Palestine.

Paul, who resigned from the State Department a year ago, highlights the current policy’s misalignment with American interests, values, and the will of the voters. He believes the issue extends beyond policy itself, pointing to political and economic incentives that distort the decision-making process.

A New Policy distinguishes itself through its inclusive voice and ambitious vision. Click HERE to watch his interview with Democracy Now on the new non-profit that seeks to represent all Americans who are dissatisfied with the current approach and envisions a future where political incentives align with ethical and democratic principles. The organization plans to lobby Congress and the Executive Branch, while the PAC will support candidates who share their vision. Paul emphasizes the need for structural change and sees this as a long-term endeavor, inviting public support through contributions and engagement.

This initiative marks a notable development in the discourse surrounding US foreign policy in the Middle East, promising to bring fresh perspectives and advocacy for change.

America needs A New Policy. But in the year since I resigned, and even before then, it’s been clear that what we face today is not only a policy problem – it is a political problem. The political-economic incentive structures around our elected officials and government leaders skew American politics and policymaking away from American interests, values, and the will of the American voter.

That’s why, together with former Biden appointee Tariq Habash and an extraordinary group of leaders including incoming board members former U.S. Ambassador Robert Ford and trailblazing corporate executive Jaleh Bisharat, today I’m proud to announce the launch of A New Policy.

A New Policy is a non-profit organization, A New Policy, Inc., to lobby Congress and the Executive Branch on policy towards Israel and Palestine.  It exists alongside A New Policy PAC, a Political Action Committee that will directly support candidates for elected office who agree that it is time for change.

What makes A New Policy different? Its voice and its vision. Its voice: A New Policy represents *all* Americans who believe that our current policies towards Israel and Palestine are unjust, irrational, out of step with American values, and out of line with the American interest. Its vision: A New Policy envisions and will relentlessly pursue a restructuring of the political-economic incentives so that American politicians can vote in line with their conscience and the desires of their electorate.

So many of you have reached out to me over the past year to ask “what can we do? Nothing seems to be working!” A New Policy is my answer to that question, and as a Director it will be my main focus and line of effort for the foreseeable future: an enduring project to bridge communities, span partisan politics, and work for the years to come to address the entrenched structural, political, and resource obstacles within our system.

Visit our new webpage to learn more about us and our policy positions, and consider making a contribution (one-time, or recurring) that will enable us to demonstrate to Washington the deep support for A New Policy from across these United States. Change will take time; it will take work; it will take money – but, with fierce urgency, change starts now.

It is time for A New Policy.

Bath & Body Works Pulls Candle After Design Resemblance to KKK Hood Sparks Outrage

Bath & Body Works recently faced criticism for their “Snowed In” candle design that unintentionally resembled hooded Klansmen. The snowflake-shaped design, which featured two holes on either side of its spindles, was deemed offensive by many social media users.

The company swiftly responded by removing the candle from its website and issuing an apology, stating their commitment to listening to feedback and correcting mistakes. They acknowledged the unintentional nature of the design and expressed their apologies to anyone offended.

The incident sparked discussions on social media about the importance of diversity and cultural sensitivity in the workplace. Some users attributed the mistake to a lack of diversity within Bath & Body Works’ marketing team, while others defended the company, stating that the resemblance was unintentional.

Although the company apologized and is removing the item, this isn’t their first racially insensitive incident; they previously faced backlash for releasing Kente print products for Black History Month. Retail workers have been instructed to destroy the candles, raising concerns about wastefulness. Some suggest donating the candles instead. This incident serves as a reminder for companies to be mindful of the potential interpretations of their designs and to prioritize inclusivity in their decision-making processes.

The public’s reaction to the candle’s design was largely negative, with many social media users criticizing the design for its resemblance to a KKK hood. Some users dubbed the design a “klandle” and attributed the mistake to a lack of diversity within Bath & Body Works’ marketing team. However, others defended the company, stating that the resemblance was unintentional and that it simply looked like a snowflake.

Lessons learned from this incident include:

  • Companies need to be mindful of the potential interpretations of their designs.
  • Inclusivity and cultural sensitivity should be prioritized in the decision-making process.
  • Diverse teams can help identify potential issues before they become public.
  • Companies should have a plan for handling mistakes, including issuing a sincere apology and taking corrective action.
  • Consider alternatives to destruction when dealing with product recalls, such as donation.

The Silent Protest That Shook a Nation: Remembering Tommie Smith and John Carlos

The 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City were supposed to be a showcase of athleticism and international unity. However, for two American athletes, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, the games became a platform for a silent protest that would reverberate through American history.

On October 16, 1968, Smith and Carlos, who had placed first and third in the 200-meter dash, respectively, took to the medal podium. As the national anthem played, they bowed their heads and raised black-gloved fists in a powerful gesture against racial inequality and injustice in the United States.

Their protest was met with immediate backlash. They were booed by the crowd, expelled from the Olympic Village, and vilified by the media. However, their courageous act also ignited a national conversation about race and civil rights.

Smith and Carlos’ protest was not simply about their personal experiences; it was a reflection of the broader struggle for racial equality in America. The 1960s was a turbulent decade marked by the Civil Rights Movement, the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, and widespread social unrest.

Their raised fists became a symbol of Black Power and unity, a visual representation of the fight for equality and justice. It was a moment that transcended sports, forcing Americans to confront the deep-seated racial divisions within their society.

Today, over five decades later, the legacy of Smith and Carlos’ protest continues to inspire and challenge us. It reminds us that athletes have the power to use their platform to speak out against injustice and to effect social change. It also serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle for racial equality in America.

When Smith and Carlos raised their fists 50 years ago at the Mexico City Olympics, they had a captive audience, back in the age when TV was king and the entire audience was rapt. A half-century later, many of the messages our athletes disseminate are every bit as powerful, but the audience is much more distracted. (AP Photo/Sait Serkan Gurbuz, File)

The silent protest of Tommie Smith and John Carlos was a pivotal moment in American history, a moment that forced the nation to confront its own racial demons. It was a courageous act of defiance that helped to pave the way for a more just and equitable society.

Smith and Carlos’ protest reflected the broader struggle for racial equality in America by serving as a visual representation of the fight for equality and justice, and forcing Americans to confront the deep-seated racial divisions within their society. Their actions also embodied the spirit of the Civil Rights Movement and the ongoing fight for social change.

How Smith and Carlos’ protest impacted the national conversation on race and civil rights:

Smith and Carlos’ protest ignited a national conversation about race and civil rights by bringing attention to racial inequality and injustice in the U.S. Their courageous act forced Americans to confront the deep-seated racial divisions within their society and sparked a dialogue about the need for change.

The protest by Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Olympics significantly shaped American culture in the following ways:

  • Raising Awareness and Sparking Dialogue: It forced a national conversation about racial inequality and injustice, bringing these issues to the forefront of public discourse.
  • Symbol of Resistance: The raised fists became a powerful symbol of the Black Power movement and the fight for civil rights, inspiring others to stand up against injustice.
  • Challenging the Status Quo: It challenged the notion that athletes should remain silent on social and political issues, paving the way for future athlete activism.
  • Legacy of Activism: It inspired future generations of athletes and activists to use their platforms to advocate for social change.

Overall, the protest had a lasting impact on American culture by raising awareness of racial inequality, inspiring activism, and contributing to the ongoing struggle for a more just and equitable society.

Unconditional Support for Israel: The Risks and Consequences of THAAD Deployment

Josh Paul

Former Director, U.S. Department of State.
Senior Advisor at DAWN, (DAWN; Founded by Jamal Khashoggi in 2018, DAWN promotes democracy & human rights in the Middle East and North Africa).
https://dawnmena.org/

In 2008, when I worked in the Pentagon, one of my roles was to brief the Undersecretary on the Middle East portion of the SDOB – the Sec Def’s Orders Book, which directs out-of-cycle deployments. As we learn of U.S. plans to deploy a THAAD battery to Israel, I can picture the tab in that thick binder that will have gone forward, with its proposal for deployment, estimated cost, and likely competing perspectives from stakeholders such as the US Army, US European Command, and US Indo-pacific Command. But one thing the SDOB will not have included will have been a political assessment.

Israeli civilians, like all peoples, should not have to live under the threat of rocket fire or ballistic missiles, and on its face, THAAD provides that protection. But does it truly? As others have noted, the THAAD deployment may make Prime Minister Netanyahu more comfortable in ordering a devastating and disproportionate strike against Iran. Even if it succeeds in its tactical objectives, such a strike would be a step away from a regional settlement and lasting peace. The decision to deploy THAAD to Israel is not simply a decision to protect Israel – it is a decision to enable further military escalation. A policy that was truly in the Israeli interest would be one that used American leverage to wind down Israel’s military operations, end the occupation, and frame a pathway to a just and lasting peace.

The THAAD deployment may also have more immediate consequences, not all of them predictable. If Israel does strike Iran, Iran’s response options will have to take the THAAD and its 48-interceptor-load into account. Do they increase their missile load to overwhelm the system, utilize cruise missiles launched from nearer Israel to destroy the system first, or recalibrate their response to focus it on easier targets such as Gulf oil infrastructure (this need not be a kinetic operation – simply scuttling a large ship in the Straits of Hormuz would do measurable harm to the global economy)? Each of these options, particularly the second, also comes with increased risk of direct harm to U.S. assets and personnel, which will be a factor for Iran to carefully consider, but also means that Biden effectively using U.S. forces not only as a deterrent but also as a triggering mechanism that may draw the U.S. further into a regional conflict – and the deployment also places THAAD, whose only operational success has been against a single missile launched from Yemen into the UAE, and which is critical to the defense of Korea and the Gulf, to the test. It will likely prove very effective – but if it fails against a large-scale barrage, there will also be a weakening of its deterrent factor in and beyond the region.

For a year, faced with a wide array of alternatives, each time the Biden Administration has chosen to double-down on unconditional support for Israel. The consequences so far have been devastating for Palestinians, destabilizing for the Middle East, and damaging to America.

US Bolsters Israel’s Massacre in the Middle East

The United States is taking a significant step to strengthen Israel’s defense capabilities by deploying a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery to the region. This move comes in response to escalating tensions and recent aerial attacks on Israel by Iran.

What is THAAD?

THAAD is a state-of-the-art anti-ballistic missile system designed to intercept and destroy short, medium, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles. It operates both inside and outside the Earth’s atmosphere, targeting missiles in their terminal phase of flight, just before they reach their intended targets.

The THAAD system comprises four main components:

  • Launch Vehicle: The platform that carries and launches the interceptor missiles.
  • Interceptor: The high-speed missile designed to collide with and destroy incoming ballistic missiles.
  • Radar: A powerful radar system that detects and tracks incoming threats.
  • Fire Control System: The command and control center that coordinates the entire THAAD system.

Why THAAD?

THAAD provides a critical layer of defense against ballistic missile threats, offering greater coverage and interception capabilities compared to other systems. Its deployment to Israel aims to bolster the country’s existing air defense network and enhance its ability to counter potential Iranian aggression.

The Current Situation

The deployment of THAAD follows a series of recent events, including Iran’s launch of nearly 200 ballistic missiles towards Israel. While most were intercepted, the attacks underscored the growing threat and prompted the US to take decisive action. The situation in the Middle East is not new, as Israel and its western ally’s face global condemnation for committing genocide and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people.  In spite of Israel committing war crimes with impunity, violating international laws, including laws against humanity, the Biden-Harris Administration has maintained its staunch support for the Israeli regime. The UN, including the International Court of Justice (ICJ) have condemned the atrocities taking place in Gaza. Additionally, The International Criminal Court’s (ICC) prosecutor has requested arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his defense chief, and three Hamas leaders. The prosecutor alleges that these five individuals bear criminal responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in the ongoing conflict in Gaza that has reached Lebanon and Syria as tensions continue to rise in the region, and even threatening all out war with Iran.

US Commitment to Israel’s Security

The US has repeatedly affirmed its “ironclad” commitment to Israel’s security. The deployment of THAAD, along with previous military aid and support, demonstrates this commitment in concrete terms.

As tensions continue to rise in the region, the presence of THAAD in Israel serves as a powerful a symbol of the strong alliance between the two countries. It sends a clear message to Iran and other potential adversaries that the US stands firmly with Israel in its defense against any threats.

DoD Issues Directive For Use of Lethal Force Against Americans As Election Nears

The Department of Defense (DoD) recently issued Directive 5240.01, which outlines policies and procedures for DoD intelligence activities and their role in assisting law enforcement and other civil authorities. This directive has significant implications for how the DoD interacts with both domestic and international entities.

One key aspect of the directive is the clarification of when and how Defense Intelligence Components can provide assistance to law enforcement agencies. While the directive emphasizes cooperation and support, it also establishes clear guidelines and approval processes to ensure that such assistance is provided lawfully and with respect for the rights and privacy of U.S. persons.

The directive specifically addresses the use of force in these situations, stating that assistance involving the potential for lethal force requires approval from high-ranking officials, including the Secretary of Defense. This provision aims to ensure that the deployment of military personnel in domestic law enforcement situations is carefully considered and authorized only in exceptional circumstances.

Will Americans see U.S. troops, on U.S. soil, using lethal force against Americans?

The short answer is, not unlikely, however the directive makes clear that lethal force is an option. The DoD directive and other existing laws and policies, such as the Posse Comitatus Act, severely restrict the use of military personnel for domestic law enforcement. The directive emphasizes the importance of protecting civil liberties and using the least intrusive means possible. Lethal force would only be considered in extreme scenarios, such as responding to a major disaster or terrorist attack, and would require high-level authorization and oversight.

Dr. Ron Paul and Daniel McAdams discuss the concerning directive that grants authority for U.S. military forces to use lethal force on American soil under certain circumstances. They explore the implications of this directive, which was reissued just in time for the upcoming elections, and question whether the U.S. is heading toward a dangerous militarization of law enforcement.

Watch the Ron Paul Liberty Report on Youtube below:

Still, DoD officials insist the primary focus remains on external threats and national security. While the new directive allows for greater cooperation with civilian law enforcement agencies, it also reinforces the principle of civilian control of the military and the importance of safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.

The DoD directive defines intelligence-related activities as those that:

  • Train personnel to perform intelligence duties or activities: This could include specialized training programs for intelligence analysts, human intelligence collectors, or other intelligence professionals.
  • Conduct research, development, testing, and evaluation for the purpose of developing intelligence-specific capabilities: This encompasses activities aimed at creating new technologies or methods for intelligence gathering and analysis.
  • Conduct intelligence-related sensitive activities: These are activities that require special safeguards due to their sensitive nature, as outlined in DoDD 5143.01.

It’s important to note that these activities are distinct from intelligence activities conducted under the authority of Executive Order 12333. However, they are still subject to oversight and regulation to ensure they are conducted in a lawful and ethical manner. The DoD directive specifies that the use of lethal force, or assistance that could foreseeably lead to the use of lethal force, requires approval from high-ranking officials, including the Secretary of Defense. This includes scenarios like:

  • DoD response to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and high-yield explosive incidents
  • Civil disturbances (which may also require Presidential authorization)
  • Assistance to civilian law enforcement where a confrontation is anticipated

The directive states it aims to ensure that such actions are carefully considered and authorized only in exceptional circumstances, emphasizing the importance of protecting civil liberties and using the least intrusive means possible. However, considering America’s fast track toward an over-militarized nation, including privacy intrusions of its citizens with secret technology and AI, the proof will be in the pudding like the writing on the wall.

Key aspects of DoD Directive 5240.01 that impact intelligence activities and civilian support include:

  • Clear Guidelines for Providing Assistance to Law Enforcement: The directive clarifies when and how Defense Intelligence Components can assist law enforcement agencies, ensuring that such assistance is lawful and respects the rights and privacy of U.S. persons.
  • Approval Processes for Intelligence Assistance: The directive establishes approval processes for different types of intelligence assistance, with higher levels of approval required for assistance that could involve the use of lethal force.
  • Restrictions on Use of Force: The directive specifically addresses the use of force, emphasizing the importance of using the least intrusive means possible and requiring high-level authorization for assistance that could involve lethal force.
  • Protection of Civil Liberties: The directive emphasizes the DoD’s commitment to protecting civil liberties and individual rights, even in situations where they are providing assistance to civilian law enforcement.
  • Focus on External Threats: While the directive allows for greater cooperation with civilian law enforcement, it reinforces the DoD’s primary focus on external threats and national security.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day: A Time for Reflection, Celebration, and Progress

Today, we observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a day to honor the strength, resilience, and countless contributions of Indigenous communities. It’s a time to celebrate their rich cultures, acknowledge their historical struggles, and recommit ourselves to a future built on respect, collaboration, and understanding.

The history of Indigenous peoples in America is complex and often painful. They have faced displacement, assimilation, and injustice. Yet, despite these challenges, they have persevered, maintaining their traditions and identities. Today, Indigenous peoples are leaders in their communities and across the nation, contributing to our shared prosperity and pushing us to confront the truths of our past.

As we celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day, it’s important to recognize the progress we’ve made while acknowledging the work that still lies ahead. We must continue to support Tribal sovereignty, invest in Tribal communities, and protect Indigenous lands and waters. By working together, we can build a future where all communities thrive.

Indigenous peoples in America have faced numerous challenges, including:

  • Displacement from their homelands: Indigenous peoples were often forcibly removed from their ancestral lands, leading to a loss of cultural connection and economic opportunities.
  • Assimilation: Indigenous peoples were pressured to adopt European-American customs and beliefs, often through boarding schools and other forms of cultural erasure.
  • Injustice: Indigenous peoples have faced systemic discrimination and violence, including the denial of basic human rights.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day holds significance as a day to:

  • Honor the strength, courage, resilience, and vast contributions of Indigenous communities.
  • Celebrate the rich cultures and heritage of Indigenous peoples.
  • Acknowledge the historical struggles and injustices faced by Indigenous peoples.
  • Recommit to respecting Tribal sovereignty and self-determination.
  • Work towards a new era of Nation-to-Nation relationships built on collaboration and understanding.

Some specific examples of progress made in supporting Indigenous communities in recent years include:

  • Increased Representation and Consultation: Appointment of Native Americans to key federal positions, including the first Native American Cabinet Secretary. Re-establishment of the White House Council on Native American Affairs and improved consultation processes between federal agencies and Tribal Nations.
  • Respect for Tribal Sovereignty: Executive Order promoting self-determination and reducing red tape for Tribal governments. Strengthening of the Buy Indian Act to support Native-owned businesses.
  • Record Investments: Significant funding through the American Rescue Plan, Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and Inflation Reduction Act for COVID-19 relief, infrastructure development, climate change mitigation, healthcare, and addressing the opioid epidemic in Tribal communities.
  • Addressing Violence and Protecting Lands: Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act with provisions to protect Indigenous women. Conservation of over 42 million acres of land and establishment of national monuments that include sites sacred to Tribal Nations.
  • Advance Funding for Indian Health Service: Ensuring hospitals can plan and hire staff, improving healthcare access.

These examples show a multifaceted approach to supporting Indigenous communities, focusing on self-governance, economic development, healthcare, cultural preservation, and addressing historical injustices. Overall, Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a day to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and work towards a more inclusive and equitable future for Indigenous peoples.

The White House: A Legacy and Global Power Hub Built by Enslaved Black People

Today marks a significant anniversary in American history. On this day in 1792, construction began on the White House, the iconic symbol of the United States presidency. However, the story of its construction is a complex one, intertwined with the harsh reality of slavery in America.

Enslaved Black Americans played a pivotal role in building the White House. They quarried and cut the stone, performed carpentry, and contributed to nearly every aspect of the construction process. Their labor was essential, yet their contributions have been overlooked or minimized.

In 2016, First Lady Michelle Obama brought this history to the forefront during her speech at the Democratic National Convention. She spoke movingly about the generations of enslaved people who helped build the White House, and the powerful symbolism of her own family living there.

The White House stands as a reminder of both the nation’s achievements and its painful past. It is a testament to the resilience and contributions of Black Americans, whose labor helped shape the nation, even in the face of oppression. As we reflect on this history, it is crucial to acknowledge the full story of the White House and the enduring legacy of those who built it.

It is important to acknowledge the full story of the White House and the legacy of those who built it because:

    • Historical Accuracy: It corrects a historical narrative that often overlooked the contributions of enslaved people.
    • Recognition of Black Contributions: It honors the labor and skills of Black Americans who played a crucial role in building the nation.
    • Understanding the Legacy of Slavery: It provides a deeper understanding of how slavery shaped American history and its enduring impact.
    • Promoting Reconciliation: It fosters a more inclusive and honest dialogue about the nation’s past, which is essential for healing and progress.
    • Reparations: The issue of reparations for Black Americans is not a complex one, considering the long history of American slavery and the contributions of enslaved Black people.

The White House represents a dual legacy:

    • Symbol of Achievement: It is the iconic home of the U.S. presidency, representing the nation’s power and democracy.
    • Reminder of Slavery’s History: Its construction by enslaved people embodies the painful history of slavery and its role in building the nation.

This duality highlights the complexity of American history, showcasing both its triumphs and its deep-rooted injustices.

Some of the most common reasons cited by proponents of reparations include:

    • To compensate Black Americans for the unpaid labor of their ancestors. During the era of slavery, Black people were forced to work without compensation, enriching white slave owners and their descendants. This unpaid labor built the wealth of the United States, and reparations are seen as a way to redress this historical injustice.
    • To address the ongoing legacy of slavery and racism. The effects of slavery continue to be felt today, with Black Americans facing systemic disadvantages in areas such as education, housing, employment, and healthcare. Reparations are seen as a way to address these inequalities and create a more just society.
    • To promote racial healing and reconciliation. The history of slavery is a painful one for Black and some white Americans. Reparations are seen as a way to acknowledge this history and begin the process of healing and reconciliation.

It is important to note that there is no consensus on the specific form that reparations should take. Some people believe that reparations should be financial, while others believe that they should take the form of policy changes or social programs. There is also debate about who should be eligible for reparations, and how much they should receive. The issue of reparations is an important one to discuss. The history of slavery is a dark stain on American history, and its effects continue to be felt today. Reparations are one way to begin to address this history and create a more just and equitable society.

According to a 2020 poll by the Pew Research Center, 60% of Black Americans believe that the U.S. government should pay reparations to Black Americans for slavery and its legacy. However, only 20% of white Americans agree. The issue of reparations is likely to continue to be debated for many years to come. However, it is an important conversation to have, as it forces us to confront the dark side of American history and to think about how we can create a more just and equitable future, especially as we commemorate the building of powerful institutions like the White House built by enslaved Black people in America.
