Trump’s Inauguration Overlap, Conflict and Road Closures

President-elect Trump’s Jan. 20 inauguration coincides with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, only the third time an inauguration has fallen on the holiday (following Clinton in 1997 and Obama in 2013).

Despite calls for some Black Americans to ignore the inauguration due to Trump’s bigoted language, the King family urges attention and engagement. Bernice King stresses the importance of listening and strategic engagement, while Martin Luther King III emphasizes service and engagement over relaxation on the holiday.

Flags will also be at half-staff for former President Jimmy Carter. The King Center will host a streamed commemorative service, and various events will honor King in D.C.
